Imbolc is the return of the light. The night of 1. on the February 2 is the threshold over which the forces of light and growth rise to the surface for the first time after winter
Admittedly still completely wild and untamed, like children striving towards adulthood. Still unfinished and impulsive but already unmistakably what will set the tone in the future.
And so, at Imbolc, the sap of the plants begins to stir again for the first time. People awaken from their winter torpor and begin to prepare for the coming spring. The light suddenly seems brighter, the sun stronger. Wonderful things happen at Imbolc.
The word Imbolc and the time
The name Imbolc means something like “putting on the sheep to suckle”. It was the time when the first lambs were born.
In the night from 1. on the February 2, Imbolc is celebrated, which of course includes the two days.
The Christian church has turned Imbolc into Candlemas. Based on customs ranging from lighting large fires and rekindling hearth fires to carrying burning candles around the house.
The other world and what you can do
As with all transitions from one phase of the annual cycle to the next, the borders to the Otherworld are thinner and more permeable than usual at Imbolc.
Which makes this festival a good time to share your own plans, thoughts and manifestations with the world.
Imbolc is ideal for manifesting the first stirrings of a new plan, a new venture. Not yet finished, with many unanswered questions perhaps, not yet as round as a finished plan. But already with the strong energy of a new beginning.
Perhaps they are still visions that are in the process of becoming more concrete. Perhaps even projects that have been in hibernation for too long and are now pushing for realization with all their might.
But perhaps it is also the desire to slowly bring our own hibernation to an end and to strive towards the light half of the year with new strength and vitality.
Whatever it is, Imbolc is a good time for the first beginnings of the new and my company creates the space for this and provides the necessary power.
Brigid, the maiden of light
At Imbolc, the reign of the light-filled goddess Brigid begins and the black goddess Percht, Morrigane or Cerridwen, who dominates in winter, has to give way.
Together with Brigid, the fertility spirits and elemental beings of the earth awaken to new life.
The goddess Brigit is the guardian of fire, she personally watches over the sacred fire at Imbolc. Brigid possesses the arrow of fire, which is the first real ray of sunlight to hit the earth at Imbolc. It can also be seen as a love arrow that hits the heart and awakens spring fever. In some stories, Brigid is accompanied by pillars of light and flames.
Customs
Imbolc has almost certainly always been a time of exuberant dancing and celebrating. Fire festivals were held and things got heated.
Symbolically, the hearth fires were rekindled and burning candles were carried through the house. Torchlight processions were organized and many a farmer symbolically shook his trees and bushes to awaken them to new life.
